iOS Remote — Thesis Project
2019
The finalized speculative design of the iOS remote, highlighting the user experience and the users’ ability to understand each function based off the current developed user interface of Apple products currently. This design accommodates multiple mediums of entertainment people take in, from social media, texting, screen sharing, switching from different devices, rating and more.
The Process
When creating my thesis, I wanted to focus on users can enjoy interactive films. Rather than create a new device, I decided to improve on an existing device people already use. But using an interactive route selector will only serve one purpose and get old, I wanted people to continue using it, so I built on the idea of mobile remotes.
There are already many remote apps, but the main problem with those are either the UI is too confusing, it has connectivity problems, or some even play ads while people are waiting for the remote to load up.
Initially, this was a remote solely for Netflix, available if you have the Netflix app on your phone. I developed it further for the remote to be similar to a media/music player feature that already comes with the phone; in this case I decided to focus it on being for iPhones, seeing I have the most familiarity with its UI.
But creating a simple remote design should not be the only thing people to allure people to use it. I researched how people consume their entertainment as well. I provided features such as; instant app switching, being able to switch from one stream service to another; customizable shortcuts, opening other apps without unlocking your phone to search for them; interactive film route selector; rating a movie and sharing it on your social media.
If I would further this project, I would look into it not only being available for the iPhone, but other phones as well.
